Using ExpressionEngine for your cms

Using ExpressionEngineExpressionEngine is a new area of interest for me here at tgcdesign. The previous version of this site was running on EE version2.1.3 and was my first attempt at designing a fully integrated cms site that I did not program myself. While others may be easier to use for the layperson, EE offers a developer a completely new world of possibilities.

ExpressionEngine is a commercial product with three licensing levels, Freelancer, Non-Commercial, and Commercial.  The Freelancer license would be perfect for many small applications that will not require a membership area. If your project will require a membership area, you will have to go with the Non-Commercial license minimally. You can always choose the Freelancer license to evaluate EE and upgrade your license as your needs expand.

Why is ExpressionEngine the choice for many top web developers? Freedom of creativity. Modules or plug-ins are not required, although there are many useful ones available. EE’s unique template engine gives you total control over your design. If you can dream it, you can create it

One of the most important parts is the ability to design freely in both the html aspects of web design as well as the information management aspects attached to today’s more robust website requirements. In ExpressionEngine, “channels” are the equivalent to having virtual databases that you tailor to what ever needs arise. This allows the development of modular blocks of information that can be placed into any template.

Channels are like a virtual database that you can create on the fly for collecting and presenting any type of information. By creating custom form fields, EE will automatically build a complete CRUD (Create, Read, Update, and Delete) application for collecting and delivering that data. Access to channels can be limited to specific users, or user groups, to provide a corroborative environment for your content management.

So far, my experience with EE has been favorable. In a very short time I have learned enough to create my own designs. If you’re looking for a turn-key solution there are many application templates available. Take some time to look through the ExpressionEngine website and discover all it has to offer.

  1. I’m not sure where you are getting your information, but great topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more. Thanks for fantastic info I was looking for this information for my mission.
